GENERAL FEDERATION OF WOMEN’S CLUBS HELP PEOPLE'S PLACE

Gesine Abrutyn, GFWC-Delaware State Federation of Women’s Clubs Kent County Vice-President and Jan Conant, GFWC-DSFWC Community Improvement Contest Chairman recently visited the  Administration Office of People’s Place bearing wonderful gifts for the women and children in the agency’s Families in Transition program.  They and their fellow club members collected toiletries and necessities to be presented to the women and children who are forced to seek shelter from domestic violence.

Members of the GFWC in Delaware have been accumulating toiletries, coloring books, crayons, pens, journals, small toys and stuffed animals for these shelters dedicated to women and children.  During the GFWC-Delaware State Federation of Club’s 2006-2008 administration, emphasis has been placed on domestic violence awareness through club projects, meetings and speakers.

Brenda Beissel, Public Relations Coordinator at People’s Place, has spoken to several groups stressing that so often the women and children come to the shelters with just what they have on their backs.  The children often do not even have time to grab their favorite blanket or stuffed animal, let alone extra clothes or a toothbrush.  The Families in Transition program offers them not only a safe environment and shelter from abuse, but they provide everything they need during their stay, which can last 45 days or more if necessary.

At the GFWC 116th Annual International Convention held last week in Philadelphia, International President Jacqueline Pierce said “Our members have truly embraced the cause of domestic violence aware-ness and the gathering of 1,085 women from around the world in Philadelphia provided a remarkable platform for us to showcase the dedication and compassion of our members”.

Mrs. Abrutyn is a member of the GFWC Milford New Century Club, Inc. and Mrs. Conant is a member of the Village Improvement Association, Inc. in Rehoboth Beach.  Ms. Beissel is a former member of the Milford group and though she is unable to attend their meetings right now she still supports the club and their wonderful work in the community, especially their focus on domestic violence awareness.   She wants the club members to know how very much the agency appreciates their help in making the women and children comfortable while staying the People’s Place Families in Transition shelters.

People’s Place is a non-profit human services organization offering many varied services through its eleven programs to the residents of Delaware.  The agency is a full member of the United Way of DE and receives state and federal grants as well as private donations, which ensure the success of their programs.  For more information about these programs or to find out how you can make a donation, please call Brenda Beissel at 302-422-8033, ext. 183.  Speakers are available for civic group meetings.  People’s Place is dedicated to becoming the agency of choice to “help people find their path to growth and independence”.  To this end, they identify the social and mental health needs of Delaware residents and facilitate the provision of services to address those needs.  Their very dedicated staff assists the people of our communities by providing high-quality services that promote dignity, empowerment, independence, safety, self-esteem and self-sufficiency.
