Independent Living
The Independent Living program provides current and former foster youth the opportunity to achieve self-sufficiency, reach and maintain their maximum potential and live in a safe and healthy environment.
Program Referrals
Youth in foster care or group care are referred by the Division of Family Services. Young adults who have aged out of foster care can refer themselves.
Description of the Services Offered
The services provided to each client are based on their individual needs and identified goals. Client services include:

Clients are provided hands-on experiences such as: DART bus trips, completing job applications, comparative shopping trips, educational planning trips, completing housing applications, opening bank accounts, etc. Clients 18 years or older, may be provided with financial assistance with rental deposits, utilities, food, clothing, furniture, etc. IL assists clients 18 years or older with applying for Medicaid, financial assistance, social security, Adult Mental Health services (AMH), Division of Vocational Rehabilitation services (DVR), or any other needed service.
Eligibility and Other Important Information Specific to the Program
People's Place provides Independent Living services to youth in foster care and group care in Sussex County. Services are also available to selected youth who are no longer in foster care or group care. Services are available to youth from the age of 16 - 21.
